To meet the demand for high performance materials in advanced composite structures, Bally Ribbon Mills has developed a multi-dimensional (3-D) continuous weaving method that produces multi-layer textiles which can be fabricated into net-shape structures.

For the design engineer involved in aircraft, satellite and missile applications, our advanced weaving capabilities offer new solutions to weight and cost problems. Another advantage of 3-D weaving technology is the ability to weave complex shapes automatically, therefore eliminating the costly, time-consuming, and labor-intensive processes.

3-D advanced composite structures represent yet another innovation introduced by the Advanced Products Group at Bally Ribbon Mills.

3-D Woven Thermal Protection Systems (TPS)

3-D woven composites by BRM are particularly successful in aviation heat shield applications such as multifunctional thermal protection systems. These systems are mission-critical components, particularly in space exploration vehicles, and 3-D woven composites reduce weight and cost while maintaining excellent performance in TPS systems. The ability to vary yarn types, density, thickness, and width, as well as resin type, allows BRM to create fully customizable TPS to fit each specific mission or application’s needs.

Film Infusion of Composite Parts

BRM uses the film infusion process to infuse a variety of resins to these complex 3-D woven shapes. This ability allows BRM to ship its 3-D woven joints or structures as pre-made assemblies, saving customers processing steps that require time, work, and specialized machinery. BRM’s film infusion capability also allows them to control more steps of the 3-D woven assembly manufacturing process, ensuring consistent quality control.
